WP_OneInstall is a free WordPress plug-in that helps you to configure one installation of WordPress to service many sites. Ruining many sites from one code base makes it easier to keep up to date with new versions of WordPress , your plug-ins and themes, it also make setting up additional sites a lot easier.
Why not User muWordpress instead of WP_OneInstall?
muWordpress will allow you to share one code base between many sites, but it is really meant for multi user multi site and as such is more than you may need, WP_OneInstall is just a plug-in so you have 100% WordPress compatibility. muWordpress also does not support installation on IIS.
Installation
- Download the required plug-in.
- Unzip file if required.
- Copy to your ‘wp-content/plugins‘ directory.
- Log in with an administration account.
- Select the ‘Plugins‘ tab.
- Scroll down to ‘WP_OneInstall’ and click ‘activate‘.
Options
Log into WordPress with an Administrator login and select “Settings->One Install” on the dashboard menu.
- Default
- Purpose: These are the settings that will be applied to site that are not explicitly name in the list. These are also the default settings for new sites. Be very careful when editing these settings as they affect many sites.
- Site {n}
- Purpose: These are the settings applied to a particular site.
- New
- Purpose: These are the settings used to create a new sites.
- Default: the default settings
- Site Name
- Purpose: The blog URL of the site to be configured. This does not applied to the default site.
- Host
- Purpose: The address of the server hosting the database.
- Default: The host from the default settings.
- Database
- Purpose: The name of the database on the server.
- Default: The database from the default settings.
- User
- Purpose: The username used to log into the database.
- Default: The username from default settings database.
- Password
- Purpose: The password used to log into the database.
- Default: The password from the default settings.
- Prefix
- Purpose: The table prefix used so distinguish between many blogs in one database.
- Default: The prefix from the default settings.
What Next
Now that the central installation is ready to receive the new site there are just a few more things that might need doing.
- make sure that the central installation has all the plug-ins you require form the old installation.
- make sure it has the theme you require.
- now re-point the old sites domain to point to the new central installation. How to do this depends on your ISP, so seek advice from them if you are unsure.
- once you are sure the domain has transferred to the central installation. Test the site, if the old site was a different version you might need to upgrade the database,
- it is now recommended you back up your database to save your new configuration
- it should be now safe to delete you old installation.
